Greetings WCGS Members!
We had a great time last year at our first potluck lecture salon, where we all enjoyed lectures by guitarist/educator Simon Powis and luthier David Pace, and of course an amazing potluck dinner. This year we’ve got even more fun planned.
Please join us Sunday, December 15th at 6 pm for our Second annual WCGS Potluck Lecture Salon, featuring composer, guitarist, and conductor Kevin Sherwin, and guitarist Dr. Danielle Cumming, professor at Salisbury University and Artistic Director of Marlowe Guitar. .
In addition to our guest lecturers, we’ll also be enjoying a potluck dinner, so please bring something to share.
Kevin Sherwin: The Classical Guitar on Early Sound Recordings: New Perspectives on Style, Expression, and Technique
Throughout the first half of the 20th century, classical guitarists exhibited distinctive performance practices that were captured through historical sound recordings. Fascinating approaches to tempo rubato, articulation, rhythmic variation, portamento, and other expressive elements formed a unique stylistic character particular of early 20th century. Guitarists including Maria Luisa Anido, Mario Maccaferri, Ida Presti, Vincente Gomez, and others, as well as prominent composers’ recordings of their own works, including Augstín Barrios, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Miguel Llobet reveal a range of individual approaches to interpretation which can inform and offer new perspectives on otherwise lost practices.
Drawing on the Yale Collection of Historical Sound Recordings, this presentation will feature historical audio samples originally found on 78s and cylinders, along with discussion of the guitarists’ interpretations of their own compositions, as well as music by Chopin, Fernando Sor, Brahms, and others. The recordings not only serve as historical artifacts, but have the potential to inspire our own playing and stylistic imagination for guitarists and audiences today.
Danielle Cumming: Yoga for the Practice Room
Classical guitarist Danielle Cumming will lead a workshop on Yoga for the Practice Room. This practical session will mix overview information with easy poses that help relieve tension, and can be practiced anywhere and anytime. No experience – or fancy Lululemon fashion – necessary!
Danielle has been teaching Yoga for Musicians since 2005, when she completed the RYT 200 Yoga Alliance certification while finishing her Doctorate in Guitar Performance at McGill University in Montreal. Danielle created a Yoga for Musicians course at McGill that continues to this day, and has gone on to develop and teach yoga programs at Guitar Festivals in Canada, the US and Europe, including at the esteemed Iserlohn Guitar Festival in Germany.
