Greetings WCGS Members!
I hope the winter is treating you well. As always, around this time of year, the air inside starts to get especially dry. Don’t let your guitar suffer. Keep it in its case, and keep it humidified!
Upcoming Concert and Masterclass: Bokyung Byun
We’re kicking off 2020 with an absolutely FANTASTIC artist, Korean guitarist Bokyung Byun on Saturday, February 22nd at 7:30 at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. I’ve seen Bokyung perform a few times now, and she never fails to impress. Bokyung has spent the last few years studying intensely with some of the most respected classical guitarists, including Scott Tennant, William Kanengiser, Chen Zhi, Tae-soo Kim, and Sharon Isbin, as well as winning and placing in some major competitions. I’ve been looking forward to this concert for some time now, so I can’t recommend enough that you go buy some tickets in our Online Store right now!
For a sample of what we have in store for you, check out this video of Bokyung Byun playing Tedesco’s El Rey Don Alonso El Bueno. Impeccable technique and incredible musicianship. This is going to be a great concert.
Opening for Bokyung in this concert by Tom Potts, former student of our good friend Jeremy Lyons, and present student of Maestro Manuel Barrueco. I’m excited to see what this new talent has to offer.
Upcoming Masterclass with Bokyung Byun
Performers wanted! We only have a few performance slots left, so be sure to signup ASAP if you’d like to perform.
Bokyung Byun will be teaching a masterclass in the afternoon of Saturday February 22nd at 1:30 pm in the West Room of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. The masterclass is free to observe and open to the public, but registration is required. Register as an auditor to sit in and hear what Ms. Byun has to teach our guest performers, or register as a performer for your chance to perform for Bokyung and have her critique your performance (a small tuition fee applies). Register as either an auditor or performer in our Online Store.
Event Recap: 2nd Annual Potluck Lecture Salon
Thanks to everyone who came out to our 2nd Annual Potluck Lecture Salon. I’m sure everybody had a great time, as did I, and was very well fed. WCGS potluckers never disappoint! I particularly enjoyed the presentations from our guests guitarist Danielle Cumming, professor at Salisbury University and Artistic Director of Marlowe Guitar, and composer, guitarist, lecturer and conductor Kevin Sherwin. We had a ton of great discussion on movement and relaxation, and got a peak into a real wealth of historic guitar recordings just now coming to light.
I’ll have additional follow-up from these discussions in a future newsletter and/or in our WCGS Members’ Facebook group. Keep your eyes pealed.
Breaking News: Jordan Dodson to perform March 21st
In a sad turn of affairs, our previously-scheduled March artist, Patrik Kleemola from Finland, was unable to secure a Visa, and so is unable to join us. However, I’m really excited to report that 2014 WCGS artist Jordan Dodson is going to jump in for our March concert. I had planned to invite Jordan to play for us next season, but Patrik’s Visa troubles open up a happy window for us to have Jordan back even sooner. Details are up on our website.
