Peter Fletcher (KL)

Add event to googleSaturday January 26, 2019 at 2:30 pmShow in Google map6000 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808, USA
Admission: FREE
Location: 6000 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808, USA

Peter Fletcher is an American classical guitarist based in Detroit and New York City. He performs over 100 concerts a year, and his recordings on the Centaur Records and Towerhill Recordings labels have been critically acclaimed.

Peter offers an audience friendly, solo recital including repertoire that runs the gamut from the Renaissance Period through the 20th Century.

His current recital program features Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and Lute Suite No. 1 by J. S. Bach, Paganini’s ever popular Caprice No. 24, the fiendishly difficult Five Bagatelles by British composer William Walton, and Recuerdos de la Alhambra, a great favorite among audiences, by Spanish composer Francisco Tarrega. In addition, Peter will perform a very special solo version of Vivaldi’s Concerto in D Major, and two of his original transcriptions from his critically acclaimed Fedrico Mompou album, released on Centaur Records, CRC 2588 in 2002.

The concert will culminate with Isaac Albeniz’s Rumores de la Caleta, one of the most exciting Spanish works in the classical guitar repertoire.

Peter’s solo recital in 2017, at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City, was extremely well received by William Gooch for Fashion Reverie:

“As a mature artist, Fletcher stands out in his emotional interpretation of the works he performs. And this is particularly apparent in the less pyrotechnical pieces in his repertoire. Though the more virtuosic works get pulses racing, the gentler works give room for reflection and in Fletcher’s corner demonstrate more accurately his craft and technical nuance. This is good calculated move on Fletcher’s part!!”

On May 6th, 2018, he performed a solo recital on the Cathedral Cultural Series, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit, MI. In February, Peter will perform a solo Recital in Atlanta, GA under the auspices of the Atlanta Music Club.

His interests outside of music include house decorating, gardening, running and fountain pens. An avid reader, he prefers the works of Cervantes, Proust, Faulkner and Balzac.
We invite you to visit www.peterfletcher.com for more information.

Bio:

Peter Fletcher began guitar study at the age of seven under classical guitar instructor, John Sutherland.
In 1980 maestro José Tomás, Andrés Segovia’s teaching assistant in Spain, held a week long Master Class in Atlanta, GA. Peter Fletcher was the youngest student to perform in the class, playing music by Bach and Carcassi.
In December, 1983, he made his formal debut under the auspices of The Brasstown Concert Association in North Carolina. Wrote the critic of The Cherokee Scout, “He has technical facility but what one remembers about his playing is the nuances, the poetical phrasing, dynamic and tonal changes, his harmonics, his cadences.”
Fletcher furthered his studies in Master Classes with David Leisner, David Russell, Oscar Ghiglia and Pepe Romero. As a performer in the Christopher Parkening Master Class in 1988, he was broadcast on National Public Radio (NPR). In 1990, the Music Teacher’s National Association (MTNA) awarded Fletcher a prize at its National Level Competition, and in 1995 he received the Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music under Nicholas Goluses, and was twice the recipient of an Eastman Graduate Award.

In demand as a performer in cultural venues throughout the country, Mr. Fletcher has been invited to give recitals at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY; Cincinnati’s Memorial Hall; St. Philip Cathedral in Atlanta; Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina and many others. In 2003 he performed on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center. In January 2005, Mr. Fletcher was invited to join the distinguished Jury of the 9th Annual Schadt String Competition in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He made his New York Debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in February 2007, and returned in 2008, 2009 and 2010 to a completely sold-out house.
Highlights of Fletcher’s past concert seasons have included appearances at The First Presbyterian Church of Lockport, NY, a concert which marked the first classical guitar performance in the history of this well established concert series. As a result of the concert, Mr. Fletcher was interviewed on NPR-affiliated radio station Classical 94.5 WNED of Buffalo/Toronto. Peter also broke new ground in El Paso, TX when he became the first ever classical guitarist to perform an entire solo recital as part of the Bruce Nehring Consort, an accomplishment which led to a feature article in the El Paso Times. More engagements included an appearance in Naples, FL as part of the Music at Trinity-by-the-Cove concert series, and a feature recital for the inaugural season of the Firehouse Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. He made his Pittsburgh debut in 2010 at the “Music in a Great Space” concert Series at Shadyside Presbyterian Church.

In 2013 Fletcher performed once again at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The program featured the Suite Compostelana by Catalan composer Federico Mompou in celebration of his 120th birthday. In addition Peter performed the world premiere of Diary of a Camino by American composer Jeremy Gill.
In October of 2014 he performed at the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center in Rockford, IL and the Pro-Mozart Society Concert Series in Atlanta, GA —all part of a nationwide tour. In 2016 Peter presented a solo recital at the prestigious Tryon Fine Arts Center in North Carolina, and performed a recital at the Hood River County History Museum this fall in Oregon. Peter’s last recital at Carnegie Hall took place on May 6, 2017 with rave reviews, and he made his solo recital debut in Detroit on May 6th, 2018, on the Cathedral Cultural Series at Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Fletcher’s many radio and television appearances have included Storyline on Fox-affiliate WAGA-TV’s “Good Day Atlanta”; KCSC in Oklahoma City; Long Island’s Public Radio WLIU 88.3 FM; NPR-affiliated Classical 94.5 WNED in Buffalo/Toronto; In 2015 Peter was interviewed by classical radio announcer Owen DeJong at South Dakota Public Broadcasting, who also aired his full recital given in Rapid City, SD.
Peter Fletcher’s three recordings, The Art of Classical Guitar, A Peter Fletcher Recital and Federico Mompou: Guitar Works (Centaur Records CRC 2588), have received critical acclaim. In September 2005 Centaur Records released Peter Fletcher plays Erik Satie. Peter Fletcher Plays Baroque Music for Guitar was released in 2008 on the Tower Hill Recordings label.

Current recordings involve an all-Grieg album, for which he himself wrote the guitar transcriptions, released in 2014 on Centaur Records, and a self-released Christmas Album in 2015. His current CD features live performances of Bach’s First Lute Suite, Ravel’s Empress of the Pagodas, Leyenda and Sevilla by Albeniz, and music by Tansman, Reusner, Couperin, Visée, Satie and Carlo Domeniconi.

Peter divides his time between Detroit, where he recently purchased a vintage home in the historic North Rosedale Park neighborhood, and New York City.

A native of South Korea, Yenne Lee is a classical guitarist who is not shy to play other genre music. By arranging and playing popular songs, she wants to expand the audience base of the instrument, hoping that would lead to more people learning the classical guitar.

Her first album, Beautiful (2016), features her own arrangements of popular songs from the 1970's. Her second album which will be released in 2018 features her own classical interpretation of some jazz standards. The first arrangement she completed for this jazz album was Autumn Leaves, which she made a YouTube video for Guitar Salon International’s YouTube channel in 2017. The video has gotten over 4 million views as of August 2018.

She has a strong background in classical music. She recorded for Sony Classical Korea as the first guitar of Botticelli Guitar Quartet in 2008. She received a doctorate from Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of the Grammy-winning musician David Starobin. Her dissertation was on Fernando Sor’s fantasies and their Romantic features. She studied with Michael Newman at Mannes College of Music and has a Bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University. She was a prizewinner at the Indiana International Guitar Competition in 2013 and at several competitions back in Korea.

Her recent performances include the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes, Vietnamese American Classical Guitar Society, and Korean American Guitar Society.

She teaches guitar at Vassar College and Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts Extension Division.

Their performances are all the more sought after in recent years as they have become more selective about their engagements and less-easily seen. Sergio has used the time to compose a series of brilliant scores and to become the guitar world’s most sought-after composer. Baltimore guitarist Jeremy Lyons has been a friend of the Wilmington Classical Guitar since the very beginning. Jeremy performed in our first concert in 2010, and we’ve been pleased to feature him twice more as a soloist, in 2014 at the Music School of Delaware, and in 2015 at West Chester University. Since that first performance with us Jeremy has completed his Master’s and Doctoral degrees with the esteemed maestro Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory, composed music for mixed ensembles such as the Pique Collective, and completed torturous training to become an ultra (100 mile) runner.

Jeremy is joined in this concert by accomplished soprano Lisa Perry, who perform together regularly. Lisa performs frequently in the greater Baltimore area with various ensembles and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Peabody Conservatory.

Jeremy and Lisa will perform a mixture of new and old works, written or arranged for voice and guitar, including German Lieder, Spanish canciónes, modern art song, and works from the bel canto operatic canon.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jeremy Lyons
A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Jeremy Lyons began studying the classical guitar at a young age with his father Glenn Lyons, who founded the classical guitar program at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. In addition to the guitar, Jeremy studied the cello with Ovidiu Marinescu and performed as a member of several orchestras and ensembles.

Jeremy received a BM in guitar performance (Summa Cum Laude) from the Florida State University, where he studied with Bruce Holzman, and holds a MM in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy, a MM in Musicology, and a DMA all from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with Manuel Barrueco.

While attending Florida State University, he also studied the viola da gamba with professor Pamela Andrews, the Renaissance lute with Anthony Rooley, and the gu-zheng (an ancient Chinese zither) with Haiqiong Deng. He was a member of the FSU Viols, the FSU Chinese Ensemble, and he regularly accompanied the FSU Early Music Ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Kite-Powell. Jeremy also participated in the Early Music Ensembles at the Peabody Conservatory where he performed with the Peabody Renaissance Ensemble and the Peabody Consort, both directed by Mark Cudek, and the Peabody consort of Viols, directed by John Moran.

As a guitarist, Jeremy gives solo recitals throughout the United States and he has also appeared as a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop, the Warminster symphony orchestra, and the Tallahassee symphony orchestra. Jeremy continues to perform on viola da gamba, lute, and Baroque guitar, and he regularly appears with his duo partner Soprano, Lisa Perry. While maintaining an active performing career, Jeremy is the current guitar instructor at Artist music education center in Perry Hall Maryland, and he also teaches guitar at the Levine School of Music in Washington D.C.

An advocate for contemporary music, Jeremy regularly writes music, collaborates with other composers, and enthusiastically participates in music that connects to a variety of audience members. He is a member of two Baltimore-based contemporary music ensembles: Mind on Fire and the Pique Collective. These ensembles explore the many sounds, sensations, experiences, and possibilities that arise from a performance, held in a public space, that invites the audience to immediately react and interact with the show that they attend.

Jeremy also delivers lectures concerning classical guitar history and the many influences that effect the repertoire of music available to the modern day guitarist. His research interests include pedagogical approaches to teaching the guitar, contemporary guitar literature, and the perception of a modern day guitarist as a musician.

Lisa Perry
Praised for her “pure, gleaming timbre” (Baltimore Sun) and “confident, penetrating account of lines” (Washington Post), soprano Lisa Perry has become a familiar face within the mid-Atlantic music scene. She has been seen on the operatic stage as the Mad Mermaid in Ophelia Forever (Amy Beth Kirsten), le feu, princesse, and rossignol in L’enfant et les sortileges (Maurice Ravel), Lady with the Hand Mirror in Postcard from Morocco (Dominick Argento), Ladybird Johnson in Camelot Requiem (world premiere; Joshua Bornfield) and the title role in Lakmé (Léo Delibes). Having a passion for contemporary repertoire, Lisa has been featured with new-music ensembles such as the Great Noise Ensemble (Washington, D.C.), SONAR New Music Ensemble (Baltimore, MD), Rhymes with Opera (New York, NY), Figaro Project (Baltimore), and the Peabody Camerata (Baltimore). She has held residencies with the Thompson Street Opera Company, PARMA Festival, New Music on the Point, Launch Festival, SUNY Fredonia, and was a New Music Fellow with SongFest in Los Angeles, CA. As is a founding member of Baltimore’s acclaimed LUNAR Ensemble Lisa has performed throughout Maryland, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania with critical acclaim. In addition, Lisa regularly performs throughout the mid-Atlantic with her duo partner, award-winning guitarist Jeremy Lyons.

Lisa received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Composition and Theory from Michigan State University in 2008 and her Master’s Degree from the Peabody Institute in Voice Performance in 2011. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Peabody under the direction of Phyllis Bryn-Julson.

Our very first concert at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in October of 2016 was an amazing success, in no small part due to the enormous talent of our featured artist, Alec Holcomb. His assured and virtuosic playing easily won us over, and his recent arrangements of a number of pieces by Isaac Albéniz captured our hearts. We were so blown away that we couldn’t wait any longer to have him back.

Since performing for us in 2016, Alec has completed his undergraduate degree at Curtis Institute of Music, and begun his masters studies at San Francisco Conservatory with Judicaël Perroy (teacher of GFA winner’s Thibaut Garcia and Xaviar Jara). We can’t wait to see what he’s learned in the past 2 years.

Works by Albeniz, Jose, Assad, and Cassado.

Guest Opening Artist: Darla Rublesky

A reception featuring MyHouse Cookies will follow the concert.

MASTERCLASS
3/23/19: Alec Holcomb will be teaching a masterclass in the afternoon, March 23 at 1:30 pm in the West Room of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. The masterclass is free to observe and open to the public, but registration is required. Register as an auditor to sit in and hear what Mr. Holcomb has to teach our guest performers, or register as a performer for your chance to perform for Alec and have him critique your performance (a small tuition fee applies). ABOUT THE ARTIST
Recognized as one of the most exciting young guitarists of his generation, Alec Holcomb has delighted audiences across the U.S., performed on National Public Radio, and earned the first prize in numerous guitar competitions. Alec’s virtuosity, attention to musical detail, and mastery at fully capturing the expressive range of the instrument takes the listener on a musical journey through a broad spectrum of the world’s greatest compositions.

In Alec’s family, love for the guitar is a tradition. Both his grandfather and father played varying styles including rock, fingerstyle, and classical. Their influence led Alec at the age of six to request lessons from his father in classical guitar pedagogy. Alec’s commitment to guitar excellence was evident from the beginning. His rapid progress led to being accepted in John Johns’ studio at Vanderbilt University at the age of 11. Soon thereafter, Alec participated in his first masterclass with Christopher Parkening – a seminal moment. It was then that Alec committed to pursuing classical guitar professionally.

At 14, Alec’s musicianship flourished under the guidance of Dr. Andrew Zohn. In the years that followed, he won several high school division competitions across the U.S., including the Parkening Young Guitarist Competition (2012). Alec was also featured on NPR’s From the Top (2012), and was selected as a Young Arts Finalist (2013).

In 2017, Alec graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, studying with David Starobin and Jason Vieaux. While at Curtis, Alec has appeared on WHYY in Philadelphia, played an array of concerts, and continued his participation in guitar competitions. Recent first prize wins include the East Carolina Guitar Competition (2014) and the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition (2015). Alec received 4th prize at the renowned Parkening International Guitar Competition (2015). He earned 2nd place at the Columbus State University Guitar Competition (2016). Alec was a Finalist in the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition (2016). He won the BorGuitar International Award (1st place) in the BorGuitar Festival Competition in Italy (2016). Most recently (2017), Alec received 3rd prize in the GFA International Concert Artist Competition.

In the fall of 2017, Alec will begin studying with Judicaël Perroy at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

The purpose of this organization is to perform music for one, two, three, four or more classical guitars from the Renaissance to the present day. This experience develops musicianship in a way that solo playing alone does not. Activities include an ensemble concert at the end of each semester in addition to other performances on and off campus.

Berta Rojas ranks among today’s foremost classical guitarists. She has been praised as “guitarist extraordinaire” by the Washington Post and by Classical Guitar Magazine as “Ambassador of the classical guitar.”

Berta has been nominated three times for Latin Grammy Awards; in the category of Best Instrumental Album for Día y Medio - A Day and a Half, a duet with Paquito D' Rivera (2012), in the category of Best Classical Album, for her album Salsa Roja (2014), and more recently in the category of Best Tango Album, for her album History of Tango (2015), recorded with the Camerata Bariloche.

Berta’s acknowledged warmth and musicality have earned her the admiration of audiences at major venues worldwide: the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and the Frederick P. Rose Hall of Jazz at the Lincoln Center, in New York, London’s South Bank Centre, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the National Concert Hall in Dublin, where she performed as a soloist with the Irish Radio and Television Orchestra, and the Flagey Studio 4 in Brussels, where she performed with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra for Belgian National Television.

In 2011, with guest Paquito D’Rivera, Berta initiated the four-year tour “In the Footsteps of Mangoré” which followed the travels of Agustín Barrios, pioneer of the classical guitar in the Americas. The duo performed in 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries, concluding the journey at the national theater of the capital of El Salvador, final resting place of the celebrated composer.

Berta takes her audience on a colorful journey of sound, embracing new works by composers in diverse genres. The journey is echoed in recordings such as Cielo Abierto (2006) and Terruño (2009), as well as the duo with Carlos Barbosa-Lima on Alma y Corazón (2007) and the celebrated Intimate Barrios (2008) featuring works by the great Paraguayan composer and guitarist. On her latest recording, Felicidade (2017), she pays tribute to Brazilian music, with guest artists including Gilberto Gil, Toquinho and Ivan Lins.

In addition to continually enriching her own career through international tours and master classes, Berta Rojas is firmly committed to furthering and disseminating the classical guitar. A particular focus is on promoting the music of her country, Paraguay, as well as Latin American music more widely, and her ongoing support for the careers of young, upcoming guitarists. With this aim, she created the first online classical guitar competition, the Barrios World Wide Web Competition, in 2009, and was the Artistic Director of the Ibero-American Guitar Festival at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.

She also co-founded the young persons' Beatty Music Scholarship Competition for Classical Guitar, offering winners the opportunity to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. After initial studies in her native Paraguay with Felipe Sosa and Violeta de Mestral, Berta studied in Uruguay under Abel Carlevaro, Eduardo Fernández and Mario Payseé, and at the USA's Peabody Institute under Manuel Barrueco, Ray Chester and Julian Gray.

She has recently joined the prestigious Berklee College of Music as Associate Professor, sharing her knowledge and love of music with a select group of young guitarists from all over the world.

Berta Rojas has been ranked amongst the most influential women in the Hispanic world (EFE and EsGlobal 2014; 2017). She has been named a Fellow of the Americas by the US Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for her artistic excellence, and honored by her country with the title Illlustrious Ambassador of Musical Art. In 2015 she was awarded the National Order of Merit of the Comuneros, and the title of Doctor honoris causa by two national universities. In 2017, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to culture, she received both the National Order of Merit Don José Falcón and the Carlos Colombino Award.

Over half a century after walking onto the world stage as the first classical guitar quartet, The Romeros continue to be a veritable institution in the world of classical music, dazzling countless audiences and winning the raves of reviewers worldwide.

Known to millions as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros were founded by the legendary Celedonio Romero with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel in 1958. The Quartet went through natural transformations, and today consists of the second (Celin & Pepe) and third generations (Lito & Celino). To have so many virtuosi of the same instrument in one family is unique in the world of musical performance, and in the realm of the classical guitar it is absolutely without precedent.

Celebrating their fifty-fifth anniversary in 2018-19, the season will include tours in Asia, Europe, South America and the United States. The Romeros will also be presenting special concerts and festivals in memory of the 100th anniversary of patriarch Celedonio Romero, including a performance in their birth city of Málaga, Spain.

Guitarist TY Zhang received First Prize in the Guitar Foundation of American (GFA) International Concert Artists Competition in 2017, known as the most prestigious guitar contest in the world. He has received First Prize in other top competitions as well in Austria, China, Russia and the U.S., including the GFA International Competition Senior Division, Austria’s Forum Gitarre Wien International Youth Competition, the Changsha International Guitar Competition, the 2017 Schadt String Competition, and the 2017 Alexander Frauchi International Competition in Moscow.

TY has given recitals in Vienna, Serbia, China and the United States. His performance for the 2017 New York Guitar Festival was broadcast on WQXR radio. The GFA prize leads him on a concert tour starting in 2018 of over 50 cities in North America, including his recital debut in Carnegie Weill Hall, with additional dates in Europe, South America and his native China. TY performs Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Allentown Symphony in 2018 and recital/concerto tours in Russia as the prize of the Frauchi Competition. With the goal of sharing the love of music through guitar in every piece he plays, TY’s concert repertoire is filled with diverse cross-genre music he loves. His debut CD will be released on Naxos in June of 2018, and includes works by Bach, Scarlatti, Brouwer, Assad, Tansman and Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

TY was born in Hebei, China. He began to study classical guitar at the age of five with his father. At seven, he was introduced to Professor Chen Zhi with whom he studied at the Music School attached to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In 2012, he was accepted into The Juilliard School undergraduate program, and during his six years of study there with Sharon Isbin, he received his Bachelor of Music in 2016, and his Master of Music in 2018. TY enjoys road cycling, surfing, and traveling.
