Please note that, due to complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, many in-person concerts have been postponed or cancelled. It is beyond our ability to update every listing as cancellations occur, so please be sure to check the event links available in each listing to ensure the event you’d like to attend is still taking place.

Join us for the Delaware debut of the New York City Guitar Quartet, a dynamic new group focused on bringing exciting new works to the classical guitar world. Featuring award-winning guitarists Jordan Dodson (our October artist), Phil Goldenberg (our November artist), Tom Clippinger and John Marcel Williams, this ensemble won’t disappoint.

Works by Sérgio Assad, Philip Glass, Frederic Hand, and Sebastian Zel.

Doors open at 7:00.

A masterclass is a public lesson in which a visiting artist listens to and critiques students one at a time in front of an audience so that everyone in attendance may benefit from their instruction.

The masterclass is free to observe and open to the public, but registration is required. Register as an auditor to sit in and hear what award-winning guitarist Xavier Jara has to teach our guest performers, or register as a performer for your chance to perform for Xavier and have him critique your performance (a small tuition fee applies).

ABOUT THE ARTIST
American classical guitarist Xavier Jara (1993) is the 1st prize winner of the 2016 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition. A native of Minnesota, he was a student of Alan Johnston at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis until 2011 when he moved to Paris, France to study with Judicaël Perroy.

Xavier studied in Paris for six years with Perroy. During this time he completed his Bachelor’s Degree at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris where he also studied with French guitarist Olivier Chassain, and lute master Eric Bellocq. He received 1st place in a number of international competitions including the Viseu International Competition (2014), the Boston Guitarfest (2014), the Gargnano, Italy Competition (2015), the Ciudad de Coria Competition (2015), and the Tokyo International Competition (2016). In 2016, Xavier returned home to the United States to win the GFA’s prestigious Rose Augustine Grand Prize.

His 2017-2018 concert tour began in September 2017. He performed more than 50 concerts in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala & Panama, including a concert at Carnegie Hall (April 5, 2018).

In May 2020, Xavier earned his Master’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He continues to perform around the world and maintains a vibrant studio as Adjunct Professor of Guitar at California State University Fullerton (Fullerton, CA). In 2022, he will join the United States Guitar Orchestra as a soloist.

The Wilmington Classical Guitar Society is pleased to bring back GFA Winner Xavier Jara, who we featured in 2018 with our presentation of the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Concert Artist Competition Winner’s Tour. Since his first concert with us, Xavier has gone on to earn his Master’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and has taken on a teaching position at California State University Fullerton with alongside fellow GFA Winner Martha Masters.
Xavier gave an absolutely incredible performance for us back in 2018, and is perhaps our most requested returning artist. We can’t wait to have him back on our stage!
Works by Takemitsu, Ponce, Gubaidulina, and Bach.

MASTERCLASS
